How to get your credit file ready for a mortgage

1 min read · Updated

The short answer

Check your file with all three credit reference agencies, register to vote at your address, pay everything on time, and avoid new credit in the months before you apply. Small fixes can make a real difference.

Check what lenders see

Lenders use Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, and each holds slightly different information. You can check all three for free. Look for mistakes, old addresses, accounts you don't recognise, and anyone you're financially linked to.

Quick wins

  • Register to vote at your current address. It helps lenders confirm who you are.
  • Fix any mistakes by contacting the agency. They must look into it.
  • If you're linked to an ex through an old joint account, ask the agencies to remove the link once the account is closed.
  • Keep card balances well below their limits.

What to avoid before you apply

  • Applying for new credit, phone contracts or car finance. Each hard search is visible to lenders.
  • Missing any payment, however small.
  • Lots of buy now, pay later plans. Some now show on credit files.
  • Gambling transactions on your bank statements. Lenders read them.
